Mini Dental Implant Consultation

If you are currently considering getting a mini dental implant, there are a few things you should know before heading into a consultation. Mini implants are a lot like conventional implants. The main differences are mini implants being about half the size of traditional implants, and they do not need an abutment to attach an implant crown.

Why mini dental implants?

The strength of a patient's jaw is one of the things often considered when evaluating them for implants. Having adequate amounts of jawbone tissue is essential for implant installation since these prosthetics are embedded in the jaw. Patients who have lost significant amounts of jaw bone tissue are usually deemed ineligible for implants unless they get bone grafts.

That is often where mini dental implants come in. Since these oral prosthetics are about half the size of a traditional implant, they require less bone tissue to hold them in place. Thanks to this feature of mini dental implants, people who have been deemed ineligible for these prosthetics now have a similar alternative.

Since mini dental implants are smaller than conventional implants, they are not as durable or strong. That makes them better suited for replacing teeth at the front of the mouth, since these are typically not exposed to as many bite forces.

Reasons why a dentist might recommend mini dental implants include the following:

  • These prosthetics are a better fit for tight areas of the mouth
  • They are great for replacing premolars or front teeth
  • Their installation requires a less invasive procedure

The benefits of opting for mini dental implants include the following:

  • The recovery period is usually shorter
  • There is less discomfort during the recovery period
  • Mini dental implants can be crowned right after installation
  • Mini dental implants cost about half the price of traditional implants

What goes on during a mini dental implant consultation?

Patients should be prepared to go over their medical history and any medication they are taking during the consultation. The dentist will also examine the patient's mouth to determine if they are healthy enough for the procedure, and if there is enough bone tissue for implants.

The dentist might recommend going for traditional implants if the lost tooth is located in the back of the mouth and the patient has enough bone tissue to hold it in place. Once the dentist has determined mini dental implants are right for the patient, a date is set for the surgery.

The installation of mini dental implants does not require an incision being made into the patient's gums as is the case with traditional implants. Instead of making an incision, the mini implant is pushed through the gums and into the jaw. This leads to a shorter recovery period. A crown might be attached to the implant after its installation, or the patient might have to wait for up to six months for the implant to fuse with the jaw. A crown is then placed on the implant once osseointegration is complete.
