Same Day Implant Supported Dentures

Same day implant supported dentures are a great way to replace missing teeth without having to wait months for osseointegration to take place. There are pros and cons to same day implant supported dentures that patients should understand before beginning treatment, which we discuss in this review.

Same day implant supported dentures: what are they and who are they for?

Many patients avoid teeth replacement procedures involving implants because they feel that treatment can take a long time. While with traditional methods of implant-supported dentures this can be true, same day implant supported dentures offer a unique way to restore a patient's smile in as little as a single dental visit.

Same day implant supported dentures explained

Same day implant supported dentures are an innovative approach to teeth replacement. They work the same way as traditional implant supported dentures and involve dental implants (small screw-like posts that are placed in the jaw), abutments, and the prosthesis, which is, of course, a partial or complete denture.

The pros and cons of same day implant supported dentures

The primary benefit of same day implant supported dentures is they allow you to replace missing teeth in a single dental visit. Many dental professionals also use small diameter implants (also called SDIs or mini dental implants) for this restoration as well. If this is the case, then the patient most likely does not require a bone graft procedure, which is often required with traditional implant supported dentures.

The drawback to same day implant supported dentures, however, is that they initially require more care to avoid the restoration coming loose while the bone fuses with the jawbone (if applicable). This process can take anywhere from three to six months.

Same day implant supported dentures vs. alternative solutions

Same day implant supported dentures provide more long-term reliability than certain alternative solutions such as fixed bridges and removable dentures, although they cost more on average than most alternative solutions. The treatment process is also more invasive in general as well, so patients should be willing and able to go through a more extensive process. However, patients can expect their same day implant supported dentures to look, feel, and function for decades to come after treatment.

How to care for same day implant supported dentures long-term

Although patients may have some initial restrictions with their same day implant supported dentures, they are able to eat as they desire (within reason) long-term. Since they are non-removable restorations, patients can also care for their new smile the same as they would natural teeth. This includes regular brushing, flossing several times each day, using mouthwash as directed, and visiting the dentist for regular check-up and cleaning visits.
