Step-by-step Guide to Mini Dental Implant Placement

Recently, a lot of information has come out about the mini dental implant. As a relatively new option, most people have no idea what it is. If you have one or more missing teeth or you wear dentures, talk to New York DMD. There is a good chance this is the complete solution you have been searching for.

A brief overview of a mini dental implant

For people with poor bone density, a few missing teeth, a small mouth or dentures, a mini dental implant from a dental professional is ideal. Instead of a more invasive procedure as seen with traditional implants, this is a quick and danger-free procedure. Replacing a single tooth often takes no more than 30 minutes. Best of all, there is no healing time afterward.

Understanding the process

First, Dr. Sandra Low will determine if a patient makes a good candidate. That involves a consultation, X-rays and examination. If qualified, that individual would schedule an appointment to get a mini dental implant. In fact, some people have the implant placed on that same day. It usually comes down to scheduling.

On the day of the procedure, a hygienist would clean the patient’s teeth. With that done, Dr. Sandra Low numbs the patient’s gums, similar to having a cavity filled. Then the dentist screws a titanium pole into the jawbone. Unlike traditional implants, with the mini version, there is no cutting or stitches required.

At the end of the pole is a round ball. Once firmly in place, the dentist attaches the artificial tooth. The whole process usually only takes 30 minutes. For people who wear dentures, the process is the same with the exception that a tooth is not added. Instead, the dentist leaves the round ball exposed.

Next, Dr. Sandra Low attaches a tiny O-ring to the patient’s dentures. When secure, that ring loops over the ball on the mini dental implant. The benefit is that the connection prevents dentures from slipping. As a result, denture wearers experience no difficulty when eating, laughing and talking.

After placing the mini dental implant, the patient rinses their mouth and goes home. Typically, the dentist recommends they stay on liquids for a day or two. As for any discomfort, over-the-counter pain medication is all the patient needs to take. The entire procedure is fast and virtually painless. People tolerate this procedure very well and seldom does anyone experience a problem.
